2022 Golden Globes won’t be aired on NBC due to lack of diversity

NBC announced that the 2022 Golden Globe Awards won’t be aired on their network amid criticism that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is not committed to diversity.

“We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform,” an NBC spokesperson said. “However change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organization executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023.”

The HFPA has not had a black member in over 20 years and has many on the left accusing the organization of operating under a lack of diversity. In April, the association’s former President Phil Berk was ousted after he referred to Black Lives Matter as a “racist hate movement.” Berk described the movement’s co-founder Patrisse Cullors as “the self-proclaimed trained Marxist.”

“Effective immediately, Phil Berk is no longer a member of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association,” the HFPA board said.

“Since its inception, the HFPA has dedicated itself to bridging cultural connections and creating further understanding of different backgrounds through film and TV,” it said. “The views expressed in the article circulated by Mr. Berk are those of the author of the article and do not — in any way shape or form – reflect the views and values of the HFPA. The HFPA condemns all forms of racism, discrimination, and hate speech and finds such language and content unacceptable.”

NBC has been airing the Golden Globes for decades, signing a $60 million deal for the exclusive rights to air the event through 2026. The network has been airing the Globes exclusively for decades. Its decision to pull back from airing the show speaks to how big the backlash against the group has become.

The Golden Globe Awards recognize excellence in film and television both in and outside of the U.S. and are presented every year during the film industry’s awards season. These awards are given by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which was established in 1943.

NBC’s 2021 Golden Globes shed 63% of total viewers from 2020, plummeting from 18.4 million overall TV viewers to a mere 6.9 million. The special’s 1.4 rating in the key demo was down 68% from 2020’s 4.7.
